If the truth regarding Nnamdi Kanu's arrest is revealed, there would be outrage — Soyinka

Wole Soyinka, a Nobel laureate, has warned that if the truth about how the Federal Government detained the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, gets public, there will be a “huge squawk.” He stated this in a recent BBC Pidgin interview. The prominent scholar urged the federal government to be aggressive in apprehending bandits and terrorists.

He stated, "It is not for me to warn the president to prepare itself because there will be a great squawk when the truth about Kanu's arrest comes out." People are claiming this and that. That is one stage in determining if Nigeria violated international law. “The second issue, though, is Kanu's behavior outside the country. Kanu has used a lot of hateful speech, which is sad. Hate speech is a matter that can only be assessed by the laws of any country. “Was it right for me to be kidnapped?” You can say intercepted as much as you want, but I believe Kanu was kidnapped. That is both international and morally unacceptable. “The government cannot wash itself clean on what appears to be a type of comparative intensity in chasing the destabilised forces in the nation,” he said. Their leaders, the Miyetti Allah, should have been detained years ago, long before IPOB was designated a terrorist organization.” Kanu, who is facing 11 counts of treason, treasonable felony, terrorism, and illegal possession of firearms, among others, jumped bail in 2017 and fled the country. The former London estate agent vanished in 2017 after being released on bail, only to resurface in Israel and then the United Kingdom.

On Tuesday, he was re-arraigned before a Federal High Court in Abuja and ordered to be remanded in the custody of the DSS, with the matter delayed till July 26 and July 27. The Federal Government said Kanu had been pursued by intelligence and security services for nearly two years before he was apprehended again, adding that the leader of the proscribed IPOB organisation was apprehended again on Sunday — without specifying where he was apprehended.
